What Really Happens at a Routine Dental Cleaning?
Our state of the art office is located in Downtown Blue Ash.
If it’s been a while since your last dental visit, you’re not alone — and you’re definitely not the only one who feels a little nervous about coming in. Many people worry about what a dental cleaning will be like, especially if they’ve had a bad experience in the past.
At Advanced Dentistry of Blue Ash, our goal is to make every patient feel comfortable, cared for, and completely at ease from the moment they walk through our doors. We believe that knowing what to expect during a dental cleaning can take away much of the anxiety and even help you look forward to your appointment.
Think of it as a fresh start for your smile — a chance to give your teeth the TLC they deserve in a calm, friendly environment where your comfort comes first.
1. A Warm Welcome and Easy Check-In
When you arrive, our front desk team will greet you with a smile and get you checked in quickly. If it’s your first visit, we’ll review your dental and medical history so we can tailor your care to you. Then we’ll guide you back to one of our comfortable treatment rooms — no stress, no rush.
2. A Gentle Look at Your Smile
One of our amazing dental hygienists will start with a quick, gentle look at your teeth and gums. This is just to get a sense of your overall oral health and spot anything that needs extra attention. If it’s time for X-rays, we’ll take those too — they’re fast, comfortable, and give us a complete picture of your smile.
3. Cleaning Away Plaque and Tartar
This step is where the magic happens. Your hygienist will carefully remove plaque (soft buildup) and tartar (hardened buildup) from your teeth — especially in those tricky spots your toothbrush can’t always reach.
We take our time here and keep you comfortable throughout. This step is important because tartar can’t be removed at home, and clearing it away helps prevent cavities and gum issues before they start.
4. Polishing for That Fresh, Smooth Feel
Next, we’ll polish your teeth using a special toothpaste that feels slightly gritty. It’s gentle but effective, buffing away surface stains and leaving your teeth feeling smooth and squeaky clean.
5. Flossing and Rinsing
Your hygienist will floss between your teeth, even the hard-to-reach ones, to make sure every surface is clean. Then you’ll rinse with water or mouthwash to wash away any remaining debris.
6. A Visit from Dr. Schlueter or Dr. Hamilton
Once your teeth are sparkling clean, Dr. Schlueter or Dr. Hamilton will stop in to check everything over. They review your X-rays (if you had them), examine your teeth and gums, and answer any questions you might have about your oral health.
This is a great time to ask about whitening, sensitivity, or any concerns you have about your smile.
You’re All Set — and Your Smile Feels Amazing
From start to finish, your visit usually takes less than an hour — and you leave with a cleaner, healthier mouth and a plan to keep it that way until your next appointment.
Why Regular Cleanings Matter
Life gets busy, but skipping your cleanings lets plaque and tartar build up, which can lead to cavities, gum disease, and even tooth loss over time. Coming in every six months is one of the easiest ways to keep your teeth healthy, your smile bright, and your dental costs down.
